It is specially formulated for patients with iron deficiency anemia due to chronic conditions such as kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, or heavy menstrual bleeding, where oral iron fails or cannot be tolerated.

Uses:
Encicarb 500mg is used for the treatment of:
  1. Iron deficiency anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  2. Iron deficiency anemia in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  3. Iron deficiency due to heavy menstrual bleeding

Storage Instructions:
  1. Store between 15°C to 25°C
  2. Protect from light and moisture
  3. Do not freeze
  4. Keep out of reach of children

How it Works (Mechanism of Action):
Ferric carboxymaltose is a stable iron complex. Once administered intravenously, it releases iron slowly into the bloodstream, where it is taken up by the body's natural iron transport proteins. This allows quick restoration of iron levels and supports the production of healthy red blood cells.

Side Effects:
Common Side Effects:
  1. Headache
  2. Dizziness
  3. Injection site reactions
  4. Nausea
  5. Flushing
  6. Hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels)
Serious Side Effects:
  1. Hypersensitivity reactions
  2. Hypotension
  3. Anaphylaxis (rare)
  4. Elevated liver enzymes

Dosage (Typical Recommended Dose):
  1. 500mg to 1000mg (single dose based on body weight and hemoglobin levels)
  2. May be repeated after 1 week if needed, under doctor’s supervision

Method of Administration:
  1. Administered intravenously (IV)
  2. Can be given as an IV bolus injection or infusion over 15 minutes
  3. Must be administered under the supervision of a healthcare professional

Precautions:
  1. Use with caution in patients with liver dysfunction or history of iron overload
  2. Monitor phosphate levels in patients requiring repeat doses
  3. Avoid use in patients with active infection
  4. Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
  5. Always perform a test dose in high-risk individuals

Drug Interactions:
  1. May interact with oral iron supplements (avoid concurrent use)
  2. Monitor in patients on erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs)
  3. Use cautiously with antihypertensive drugs due to risk of hypotension

Allergies:
  1. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ferric carboxymaltose or any of its excipients
  2. Watch for signs of allergic reactions like rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling

Overdose Information:
  1. Iron overdose can cause iron toxicity leading to metabolic acidosis, liver damage, or death
  2. In case of overdose, provide supportive treatment and monitor iron parameters

Missed Dose Instructions:
  1. If a dose is missed, contact the healthcare provider for rescheduling
  2. Do not attempt to self-administer the missed dose
