How It Works (Mechanism of Action):
Paclitaxel stabilizes microtubules in the cell and prevents their breakdown during cell division (mitosis). This inhibits the normal process of mitosis, causing cell death in rapidly dividing cancer cells.

Common side effects:
  1. Hair loss (alopecia)
  2. Nausea and vomiting
  3. Diarrhea
  4. Peripheral neuropathy (numbness, tingling)
  5. Fatigue
  6. Low white blood cell counts (neutropenia)
Severe side effects:
  1. Allergic or hypersensitivity reactions
  2. Severe neutropenia or anemia
  3. Heart rhythm disturbances
  4. Liver function abnormalities
  5. Infections due to immunosuppression

Dosage (Typical Recommended Dose):
  1. The typical dosage is 175 mg/m² every 3 weeks or 80 mg/m² weekly, depending on the cancer type and treatment protocol
  2. Cytax 260mg is dosed based on body surface area (BSA)
  3. Only a qualified oncologist can determine the exact dosage per patient

Method of Administration:
  1. Administered via intravenous infusion over 3 hours
  2. Requires pre-medication with corticosteroids, antihistamines, and H2 blockers to prevent hypersensitivity reactions
  3. Should be diluted in a suitable IV fluid (e.g., 5% dextrose or normal saline)
  4. Given in a hospital or clinical oncology setup under professional supervision

Precautions:
  1. Patients should be pre-medicated to reduce allergy risk
  2. Monitor blood counts, liver and kidney functions regularly
  3. Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding
  4. Use effective contraception during and after treatment
  5. Avoid crowds or sick individuals due to infection risk

  1. Interacts with cisplatin, increasing risk of neurotoxicity and myelosuppression
  2. May affect drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP2C8 enzymes
  3. Use caution with live vaccines
  4. Inform your doctor of all current medications and herbal supplements

Allergies:
  1. Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Paclitaxel or polyoxyethylated castor oil (Cremophor EL)

  2. There is no specific antidote
  3. Management is symptomatic and supportive, with intensive monitoring

Missed Dose Instructions:
  1. If a scheduled dose is missed, consult your oncologist immediately
  2. Do not attempt to take a missed dose without medical supervision
  3. The doctor may adjust your schedule based on clinical condition

Additional Notes:
  1. Hair loss is common but temporary
  2. Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice during treatment
  3. Report fever, unusual bleeding, bruising, or signs of infection promptly
